Many mysterious assumptions and claims circulate about Antarctica. No wonder. There is a no-fly zone over Antarctica. Some theories suggest there's an alien base there. Or that enormous, extraordinary resources are hidden there. Or, perhaps the most preposterous theory, that Antarctica is the end of the world or the Earth.
In any case, thanks to the satellite named GOCE, which was actually only supposed to measure the Earth's gravity, it has been discovered that ancient, lost continents lie beneath Antarctica's 2-kilometer-thick ice.
For four years, the ESA satellite collected data from an unusually low orbit. The analyzed measurements provided the first precise view of the hidden structure beneath the up to two-kilometer-thick ice sheet.
The surprising result: deep beneath the ice lie remnants of very old continents, whose rocks show astonishing similarities to regions in Australia, India, and South America.
Perhaps even a land of milk and honey backup for humanity?! :)
